National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) is a time for families to make sure that their homes are safe and to help people understand their consumer rights. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), now is the perfect time for consumers to check their home for recalled products (and, as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) points out, it is also an opportunity to remind people of their rights as consumers so that they can make well-informed decisions about money and avoid scams)

At this time, the CPSC is recommending that consumers check their homes, apartments, and businesses for recalled products. According to Robert Adler, the Acting Chairman of the CPSC, “It’s the perfect time to take action,” Mr. Adler further noted that “If you own a recalled product, immediately stop using it, and get your remedy in the form of a refund, a free repair or free replacement.” According to the CPSC, every year, the CPSC announces approximately 300 recalls, which involve millions of products. This past year alone, recalls included everything from defective infant sleep products and unstable furniture to recreational utility vehicles and lawn mowers. According to the CPSC, it is likely that you or a friend or family member has a product in their home that has been recalled. Recalled products are dangerous because they can injure someone, even fatally sometimes.

Consumers can readily check to see if they have a recalled product by going to cpsc.gov. The lawyers at Liever, Hyman & Potter, P.C., urge everyone to act now and check their home for recalled products.
