Drivers of all types of motor vehicle are urged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to be especially vigilant during the remainder of the summer in order to protect your property from being stolen. NHTSA reports that a motor vehicle is stolen every 41 seconds in the United States, with over 765,000 victims of car, auto, and motor vehicle theft each year. Heidi King, the Deputy Administrator of NHTSA, states that “vehicle theft is a crime that hurts consumers and the economy.” In addition to the vehicle itself, NHTSA reports that thieves target car engines and radios along with personal items left inside cars, such as mobile phones, electronic devices, wallets, and pocketbooks. According to NHTSA, the best prevention against car theft and theft from cars is to always lock your car doors and not leave valuables inside your car. If it is necessary to leave items of value in your car, they should be hidden from view. Additional suggestions from NHTSA include taking your keys with you, closing windows all the way, parking in well-lit areas, and considering the use of car alarms, car immobilizers, and/or electronic vehicle recovery systems.
