New Study Confirms Risk of Distracted Driving

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Published January 2, 2014, Klauer, Sheila, Web) confirms the risk of distracted driving, especially among novice drivers. Anything that requires drivers to take their eyes off the road increases the risk of crashes and near-crashes. Distractions include reaching for and dialing a cell phone and texting.

The study equipped the test vehicles with four cameras (forward view, rear view, view of the driver’s face, and view over the driver’s right shoulder) along with a variety of sensors. An estimated 9% of all persons who drive during the day do so while dialing or talking on a cell phone or sending or receiving text messages.
